Rock royalty enter their Imperial phase
They've done gothic metal and operatic whimsy - now this second batch of reissues see Queen in globe-conquering stadium-rock mode. The singles we all know, but there's plenty more: News Of The World contains moments of jazzy melancholy; Jazz is packed with tremendous uptempo glam metal; The Game experiments with funk and power ballads; Flash Gordon sounds like a rocked-up BBC Radiophonic Workshop experiment; and Hot Space is a brave, flawed stab at disco. Deep Cuts Vol 2 compiles some of these albums best obscurities (including News Of The World's "Spread Your Wings" - a lesser-spotted John Deacon composition, Jazz's barnstorming soul-prog "Mustapha", and Hot Space's hornfest "Staying Power".) Each CD comes with five bonus tracks, a mix of live versions, demos b-sides and BBC sessions. John Lewis.

A return form after some mixed experimentation, this is definitive Queen, 80s style. The accent is firmly on straight ahead big production rock. Taylors Radio Ga Ga an Deacons I Want to Break Free became stadium-stompers the world over, and, altough some of the lesser track display a lyrical naivety, the album works briliantly as loud music for boy racers.
