Alan James Hollinghurst (Stroud, 1954. május 26. –) angol regényíró, költő, novellaíró és fordító.
Fiatalkora és tanulmányai[szerkesztés]
Hollinghurst a gloucestershire-i Stroudban született, James Hollinghurst bankigazgató, aki a második világháborúban a RAF-nél szolgált,[2] és felesége, Elizabeth gyermekeként.[3][4] A Dorset's Canford Schoolba járt.[5]
Angolt tanult az oxfordi Magdalen College-ban, 1975-ben BA, 1979-ben MLitt diplomát szerzett. Diplomamunkája három meleg író: Firbank,[6] Forster és Hartley[7] műveiről szólt.[8] Otthon lakott Andrew Motion[9] leendő költődíjasával Oxfordban, és egy évvel Motion előtt megkapta a költészeti Newdigate-díjat. Az 1970-es évek végén a Magdalennél, majd a Somerville-ben és a Corpus Christiben tartott előadásokat. 1981-ben előadásokat tartott a UCL-ben, majd 1982-ben csatlakozott a The Times Literary Supplementhez, helyettes szerkesztőként dolgozott: 1985–1990.[10][11]
Irodalom[szerkesztés]
Hollinghurst hosszasan taglalta korai életét és irodalmi hatásait egy ritka interjúban otthon Londonban, amelyet a The James White Review 1997–1998-ban adtak ki.[12]
2004-ben elnyerte a Booker-díjat a The Line of Beauty című regényért.[13] Következő regénye, a The Stranger's Child felkerült a 2011-es Booker-díj hosszú listájára.[14]

Hollinghurst meleg,[21][2][13] és Londonban él.[22] Bár most párjával, Paul Mendezzel él,[23] Hollinghurst korábban ezt mondta: "Egyáltalán nem könnyű velem együtt élni. Bárcsak integrálhatnám az írást a hétköznapi társasági életbe, de úgy tűnik, nem tudom. Tudtam, amikor elkezdtem [írni]. Azt hiszem, akkor több energiám volt. Most hosszú időre el kell szigetelnem magam."[24]
