the author fails to explain why Vincent could go on doing pretty successful tours around the world, while in the same time having an almost disastrous record on the charts : in the USA, he charted 5 times only, twice in the top 20, in GB, where he was more successful, he had 4 top 20 hits, never entering the top 10

A második baleset. Cochran halála (1960)[szerkesztés]

The Yorkshire Post described the tour as "a prolonged assault on the eardrums". The Leicester Mercury wasn’t much better and said: " Why do these idiotic teenagers behave in such a ridiculous fashion?" Whilst the critics were very much at odds with the performances the fans lapped it up. Adrian McKenna said: “This was the first all-rock n roll package tour in the UK. Previous visiting rock acts like the Crickets were headliners on bills with comedians, crooners and big bands and were basically novelty billing on a tour of variety acts.”The Cochran/Vincent tour, billed as a 'Fast Moving Beat Show', comprised of one-night shows and week-long residencies. https://www.sheffieldtelegraph.co.uk/heritage-and-retro/retro/the-visit-of-eddie-cochran-and-gene-vincent-to-sheffield-gaumont-has-become-the-stuff-of-legend-3142254

Born to be a Rolling Stone (1960-1965)[szerkesztés]

Also appearing at the club was Roy Young and Tony Sheridan & The Star Combo, who had just come back from Israel after a disastrous tour with Gene Vincent (September to October 1962). In his black Gestapo-like leather outfit, Vincent, for obvious reasons, had not gone down all that well in the nightclubs of Haifa and Jerusalem.[28]

Slow Times Coming (1966-1971)[szerkesztés]

He had this South African girl , Jackie , with him . He ' d heard about ' High School USA ' ( Facenda ' s biggest single as a solo artist ) , but he just couldn ' t believe that was me . We talked and that was the last time I saw him alive... he talked with a British accent from living over there , a lot of ' actually ' s and things of this nature . But he was still hyper , he wouldn ' t stay long , he was up and down . ” Vincent entered the Veterans Administration Hospital in Albuquerque in February 1966 . On the 20th, Gene and the Angels played a more important club, the Speakeasy, and things went a lot better: "Gene went on and slayed the audience. Nearly through the set, Georgie Fame took over on piano.... Gene broke all house box-office records and the audience included many stars such as John and Yoko, George Harrison, some of the Who, and many others.... In the end there were dozens of people who came to congratulate Gene on a brilliant show."5 Hagarty, page 223

International Times, March 1971 "When I entered music, music was a fantastic thing. It was a competition; we all competed with each other. But since then, music has become a business … it’s more of a competition among businessmen. You stuff things down people’s throats." Gene Vincent: There's One in Every Town 55.o.

recalls Dave Tate, who produced the session for the Johnnie Walker show . Gene Vincent died at the age of 36 on October 12, 1971, from internal haemorrhage and heart failure[24][25][26], while visiting his father in Saugus, California. (In the Inter-Valley Community Hospital at 21704 Golden Triangle Road in Saugus. The place is known today at the Hillside Professional Center.)

Personal life[szerkesztés]

"Ruth Ann was just 17 when she married 21-year old Gene, who was, at that time, simply a humble Navy sailor who loved to sing. After "Be-Bop-A-Lula," though, he began referring to her as his "cousin"; no surprise that the marriage went quickly downhill from there." http://susanvanhecke.blogspot.com/2008/04/deconstructing-gene-vincent.html

Simon Frith, in a 1970 Rolling Stone article heralding the release of two greatest hits packages and an American comeback album, I'm Back and I'm Proud, recalled a then recent performance by Vincent. "He was in pain throughout and sang kneeling, his bad leg stretched out straight behind him.... There were no girls in the audience but for the assembled rockers he was the ultimate in rock and roll—offering nothing but music and sacrificing everything to that music, their music. Vincent would have only three other Top Forty hits— Bluejean Bop, Lotta Lovin', and Dance to the Bopbut his live performances helped make him an icon to admirers in both the United States and Europe, as described by David Dalton and Lenny Kaye: “Unable to move in a normal fashion, he would assume a rigid stance before the microphone, clutching it as if for life . Dressed in black leather, a gaunt face chiseled in triangular edges, he presented a stark and tension-laden image, funneling his private damages into an emotive, sweat-stained performance that went far beyond light entertainment" Encyclopedia of Great Popular Song Recordings - 3. kötet - 275. oldal  Steve Sullivan · 2017 / Rock 100: The Greatest Stars of Rock's Golden Age  David Dalton, Lenny Kaye Cooper Square Press, 1999 Page 31

October 20, 2014 Courtesy of Sal Cirrincione, Premiere Networks Moody Blues bassist John Lodge was recently in the studio recording a song for a Gene Vincent tribute album called The Black Leather Rebel. A very young Lodge crossed paths with the early American rock and roller in 1964 when Vincent moved to England. Lodge tells us exclusively, “I was asked if I wanted to be the bass player in his U.K. band so I had a meeting with him at the TV studio where he was appearing [and] was asked if I would write a song for him, which I did. It was called ‘Stay Away From Me’ and, to my knowledge, I was the only person to have a copy of this demo. [But apparently not as] a few years ago this demo appeared on an album called In Search of the Lost Moody Blues Songs. The song will be on the album, but not as performed by Lodge. He recorded “Important Words,” which is one of his Vincent favorites.

Bowie taped a multitrack demo of ‘Hang On To Yourself’ on his first US trip, while staying with RCA executive Tony Ayres in Hollywood. He gave the recording to Ayres to pass on to Gene Vincent, who was also recording demos at Ayres’ studio.

On a promotional trip to the US in January 1971, I was very kindly offered a room to crash in by the record producer Tom Ayers. At the time, Tom was producing one of the all time rock heroes, Gene Vincent. One night, at the recording studio, Tom asked whether I would like to jam or sing something with Gene. At that point, I had already written ‘Moonage Daydream’, ‘Ziggy Stardust’ and ‘Hang On To Yourself’. We settled on ‘Hang On To Yourself’ and made a ghastly version of it which is floating around somewhere on eBay, I expect. I went on to explain that Ziggy wasn’t going to be a real rock star and that I would play him. I think they all thought I was talking in terms of a musical. It’s possible that I was; it’s now hard to remember what direction I had expected him to go. Zig rather grew as he grew, if you know what I mean. Listening to the Tom Ayers demo now, I can’t hear a trace of Vincent anywhere on it, though Tom’s son (who sent it to me) assures me that his dad swore Gene was on it. Gene left his mark on Ziggy in one other way, though. Back in the Sixties, Vincent was to co-star with Little Richard on a whirlwind package tour of the UK. Someone forgot to get his work permit together so he was not allowed to sing from the stage itself. To get over this, he sang his spot from the aisle. Ludicrous but very exciting for us fans. At the time, Vincent had been wearing a leg brace, the result of a car accident. It meant that to crouch at the mike, as was his habit, he had to shove his injured leg out behind him to, what I thought, great theatrical effect. This rock stance became position number one for the embryonic Ziggy. Mick Rock captured that well on many occasions, the best version appearing on the back of the Pin Ups album.

Gene Vincent - simply had the best damn voice in rockabilly. So, much more than "Be-Bop-A-Lula". Gene didn't have the charisma of Elvis and didn't have a Col. Tom to tell him when to pee. Of course this has nothing to do with the fact that I run Gene's official web site. [29]

"Gene was the original punk-rocker," Dude says now. "He was really talented and had a super ear. He had more black blood in him than any other white guy around, even more than Presley. Gene was a soulful cat. He was in-your-face and real skinny and had that messed-up leg [from a childhood car accident] and drank, but he had soul."
