A Nitrosopumilales az Archaeák egyik rendje a Thaumarchaeota törzsben.^[1] Az N. maritimus képes 10 nanomoláros koncentrációnál is ammóniát oxidálni.^[2] Az üledékből David Stahl (University of Washington) csoportja izolálta.^[3] A Nitrosopumilus maritimus rendkívül gyakori archaea.
