Help in English wanted![szerkesztés]

If somebody is given the nickname "Dombi", what is it referring to? Thank you very much and best regards, Oalexander vita 2023. november 24., 06:03 (CET)[válasz]

answer
The dictzone.com net-dictionary does not recognize such an English word ("dombi"), but suggests the Hungarian translation 'tingli'.
The Hungarian Interpretive Dictionary (Magyar Értelmező Kéziszótár) does not recognize the word 'tingli', only the German term 'tinglitangli', which (sarcastically) means a low-quality entertainment venue with programs.

Thank you very much for your attention. I do not speak Hungarian, but therefore seek the help of somebody with Hungarian as first language. "Dombi" is supposed to come from the Hungarian language, possibly from "domb". Can it be derived from some other word? What picture would it create to call a person like that? Best regards, Oalexander vita 2023. november 24., 10:10 (CET)[válasz]
It's short for something. For example Dombóvári István. Bean49 vita 2023. november 24., 12:30 (CET)[válasz]
Yes, this is a good explanation for the Hungarian nickname 'Dombi'!
The Hungarian family name 'Dombóvári' exists. 'Dombóvár' is the name of a Hungarian town, the ancestor of the person named presumably comes from here. It is a Hungarian custom, not only among children, to shorten the long family name as a nickname. (Latest example: 'Szoboszlai Dominik)' for short 'Szobi'...)
