The introduction of an increased amountof spring water will enable Foreman Walters to use this water not only inthe hatchery, but also in all the numerous ponds of the station, and theeffect will be to eradicate some of the most troublesome diseases whichhave ever attacked brook trout and brown trout under cultivation. Someof the trout streams on the north shore of Long Island are polluted bysewage. One of the results of this pollution is a skin disease particularlyfatal to brook and brown trout. Another pest is the ulcer disease, referredto in the account of fish diseases. So injurious have these disorders becomeat certain times that tens of thousands of large trout have been killed bythem. At Cold Spring Harbor, thanks to the new supply of artesianwater, the troubles have been practically overcome. Oneida Hatchery. The strippinghouse for pike perch was formerly supplied with water through two-inchpipes limning a distance of 1,200 feet from a small dam on Frederick creek.In the extremely cold winters these pipes were often split, and much ofthe water to be conveyed was lost. It was difficult to secure sufficientwater to keep the brood fish alive in the tanks at the stripping house. Aboiler and pump were purchased to furnish a new water supply. Thisapparatus with the necessary accompaniment of boiler house, pipe, etc.,was installed on Frederick creek near the stripping house at a cost of lessthan S400. With a less outlay than was involved in repairs to the oldpipes, the new water supply was greatly increased, easily maintained andrendered the practical work of stripping fish easy of accomplishment andfar more successful than ever before.
