Keep Wiseman Alive is the Hungarian heavy/power metal band Wisdom’s annual special show. The event takes place in Budapest towards the end of the year in November/December as yearend finale. A theatrical style is typical for this event due to extensive decorations and flare. Sometimes additional characters take part in the show as well, such as Wiseman, who appeared on stage with the band a couple of times. The first Keep Wiseman Alive show was held in 2005 which was also the bands first headline gig. At first this concert was supposed to be a one time show with the intention to put as much emphasis on the visual aspects as on the music, creating a unique blend to deliver a special show. The name of the event came from the basic idea, that if people show up then Wiseman will be kept alive, and therefore the band as well. The event is also linked to many other important stages in the band’s history, such as a new album release, or the celebration of a jubilee.

Keep Wiseman Alive I.[szerkesztés]

The first Keep Wiseman Alive show was held on the 19th of November 2005, which also was the band’s first independent headline concert. The venue chosen for the event was the Wigwam Rock Club, now known as Club202, a venue capable of a 1300 person audience.[1]

There wasn’t an entrance fee for this gig as the band wanted to show the audience what they’re capable of doing as a headline act. At 11 pm the venue was full and the gates were closed, leaving approximately 200-300 people stuck outside in the cold.

All the fans who arrived wearing a Wisdom shirt, received a lighter with a Wisdom logo, which they could trade in for a pint of beer at the bar.

The stage was built from the remains of a film studio thrown out set decorations. The lyrical song “Unholy Ghost” was performed on acoustic guitars including the bassist Mate Molnar, while artificial snow was feathering on the audience. Drummer Peter Kern performed a drum solo with burning cymbals.

The opening act of the night was the band Halor from Szombathely.

The second Keep Wiseman Alive show took place on the 18th of November 2006. This event was also the official release show for the band’s first full-length album, released on the 6th of November. The chosen venue for the event was again the Wigwam Rock Club.

In spite of an entrance fee this time the success was still on the same level as the previous year. This seemed to secure the future of the Keep Wiseman Alive event.

The decorations this time included rounded, rock-like elements and also water-spouts which were taken from the “Happy Stage” theatre’s basement by their yeoman at the time. Some of these elements were used later on in the band’s video for the song “Wisdom”. In the title song of the album even Wiseman appeared on stage.

The event was supported by Jagermeister this time, which became an official sponsor of the band.

The opening act for this night was Romeo Verzik from Somorja (SK). [3]

The third Keep Wiseman Alive show was held on the 23rd of December 2007 which also marked the date of the new “At the Gates” EP release. The venue again was the Wigwam Rock Club.

Due to Istvan Nachladal’s departure from the band a few months’ earlier, all remaining shows for the year, including the EP release show had to be finished with the help of Zoltan Kiss. The release of the “At the Gates” EP was as a form of gratitude towards Zoltan’s help during the difficult time. Due to sudden health issues, drummer Peter Kern could only perform a short block in the set. To help him out, all previous Wisdom drummers performed a few songs.

Entry for this event was for free for the fans.

All decorations were given by Gabor Domjan, the stage designer of the “Island Theatre” placed in Szigetszentmiklos near Budapest. Together they created a forest-like atmosphere on stage to resemble the “At the Gates” EP cover art work.

Keep Wiseman Alive IV. (Wiseman Is Alive)[szerkesztés]

The event was held on the 14th of November 2009 as the only Wisdom show of that year, the show being advertised as “Wiseman is Alive”. It was held at the Club202 venue in Budapest.

The 2008 Keep Wiseman Alive show was cancelled as no full-time replacement was found after Istvan Nachladal’s departure. After a year of searching the new vocalist, thing’s turned into a good direction and the band decided to carry on with the show, and let the audience know that they’re soon ready to roll again.

As a seal to the past they performed a monster show of 3 hours in length. The first half of the gig was performed by Istvan Nachladal, the band’s original singer and the second half by Zoltan Kiss, who helped the band during the hardest times. The band played all their original songs as well as all the cover songs they have ever played live.[6]

There were no special decorations used on this event, as main emphasis was put on the songs and performance.

Openers of the evening were Tristana from Rozsnyo (SK) and Avatar from Budapest.

Keep Wiseman Alive V. (X Wise Years és Judas album release show)[szerkesztés]

Keep Wiseman Alive V flyer

The fifth Keep Wiseman Alive show was held on the 17th of December, which was an opportunity to celebrate the band’s 10 years anniversary and was the final show of the X Wise Years national tour. Also this event was the new full-length album Judas’s release show. The venue chosen was the Club202. [8]

Despite the fact that the band found its new singer named Gabor Nagy (NG) a year before, the 2010 Keep Wiseman Alive show had to be cancelled due to many minor issues.

The decorations for the event were created by designer Laszlo Gombos (Lancelot), made of artificial rocks, to resemble Wiseman’s cave as seen on the “Judas” album cover.

The event was supported by Royal Vodka, the band’s main sponsor at the time. With their help the band could give away free Wisdom shirts for the first 300 ticket pre-order owners.

Openers for the night were Chronology and iScream from Budapest.[9]

The event took place on the 8th of December 2012. The venue chosen was the Club202.[11]

This was the new guitarist, Mate Bodor’s Hungarian introduction to the national audience, after Zsolt Galambos’s departure earlier that year.[12]

With the use of special lights and light bridges the stage had a more modern look than on the previous Keep Wiseman Alive shows.

The main sponsor again was Royal Vodka, and the first 300 fans received an embroidered Wisdom hat.

The opener for the evening was Twister from Budapest.

Keep Wiseman Alive VII. (Marching For Liberty album release show)[szerkesztés]

Keep Wiseman Alive VII flyer

The seventh Keep Wiseman Alive show was held on the 15th of November 2013, this time at a new venue called Barba Negra located in Budapest.[14]

The original plans for the night was to invite the German band Powerwolf as well as the Italian band Vision Divine, whose lead singer is Fabio Lione (Rhapsody, Kamelot, Angra). Fabio recorded guest vocals for the title track of the new Wisdom album. Sadly, Vision Divine had to cancel their show a few days before the event thus the planned joint production with Fabio did not happen.[15]

For the visual effects the band asked designer Gabor Domjan to manufacture two ravens with Wisdom logo medals on their necks. The band designed several types of backdrops for the stage which resembled the style of the Marching For Liberty cover artwork. With the use of more light effects, occasional pyrotechnics and burning cauldrons on each side of the stage the band managed to create a special atmosphere. While performing the title track of the new album even Wiseman came on stage. [16]

As openers and guests the German band Powerwolf performed, as well as the upcoming band Tales of Evening from Nagykanizsa.
