NIST materials research engineer Tammy Oreskovic deposits smooth muscle cells onto a polymer scaffold. Oreskovic and colleagues study what conditions produce the best cell growth and use a bioreactor (foreground) to test whether the resulting engineered tissues can withstand mechanical stresses similar to those produced by a beating heart.
