Gotthardbahn: 4/4-gekuppelte Lokomotive mit Schlepptender Serie D 4/4 Nr. 128, gebaut 1890 von der Lokomotivfabrik Maffei in München, 1907 versuchsweise mit einem Brotankessel ausgerüstet.
Für den Güterzugdienst auf der Gotthard-Bergstrecke beschaffte die private Gesellschaft ab 1882 bei Maffei in München eine 4/4-gekuppelte Lokomotive mit Schlepptender, welche die einzige ihres Typs in der Schweiz bleiben sollte. Konstruktiv ähnelte sie den 3/3-gekuppelten Maschinen des „Bourbonnais“-Typs, nur dass sie um eine Achse verlängert wurde. Den 31 Münchner Maschinen folgten 1890 noch fünf weitgehend baugleiche „Winterthurerinnen“.
Lok Nr. 128 wurde 1907 von der Schweizerische Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik (SLM) in Winterthur versuchsweise mit einem so genannten Brotankessel (nach dem österreichischen Ingenieur Johann Brotan [1843-1918]) ausgerüstet. Der Brotan-Kessel besitzt an Stelle der Feuerbüchse eine enge Schicht von Rohrleitungen. Die in den Anfängen fast ausschließlich aus Kupfer bestehenden Feuerbüchsen der Dampflokomotiven sollten, um Kosten und Unterhalt zu sparen, durch eine einfachere Bauform ersetzt werden. Die Konstruktion Brotans bestand aus einer Wasserrohrfeuerbüchse mit relativ großer direkter Heizfläche und dünnen, leicht zu reinigenden Rohren, die die Wände der Feuerbox bildeten und von dort in einen besonderen Oberkessel mündeten. Mehrere österreichische Lokreihen, darunter die berühmte Gölsdorf-Reihe 310 der K.k. Staatsbahnen, waren mit Brotankesseln ausgerüstet
